Customer Review: A mandatory tool

I first learned about the Knipex brand when my wife and I were in a little town in Georgia where her uncle had an old-time hardware store (4 generations of owners). I bought a pair of these pliers (her uncle sold them to me at his cost and they weren't much cheaper than what you can buy them for now). This was a few decades ago and these pliers are still serving me well. 10 or 15 years ago I found a used pair of these pliers and bought them for my wife -- she keeps them in a kitchen drawer and they also get used a lot.
These Cobra pliers have as their constant companion the Knipex plier-wrench. These two tools go everywhere with me when I'm fixing things. In fact, my usual kit when I got to look at something is usually these two pliers and an old Snap-On screwdriver set I bought in the 1960's (I don't know if they still make it, but if I lost this screwdriver set, I would replace it with the same set if I could).
These pliers are well-engineered and made with care. They are carefully forged and machined. The indexing mechanism means once you set the size, you don't have to worry about the jaw size changing. This is in contrast to the Channellock-style design, which is annoying when the pliers slip to a new opening size. I still like my Channellock pliers and use them (especially my super-big ones), but the Knipex Cobra pliers are by far my first choice.
My son-in-law is an HVAC tech and he is also a tool nut. He agrees that these Cobra pliers are about the best general-purpose pliers you can have.
I'm quite fickle about seeing people apply pliers to nuts, as they almost always ding up the nut. That's why I always have the Knipex plier-wrench with me. However, the Cobra water pump pliers are so well designed that I will (on occasion) apply them to nuts and hex shapes. I don't like doing it, but they damage the surfaces much less than other pliers.
I reserve the Amazon 5 star rating only for products I consider exceptional; these pliers are definitely exceptional and will not fail to please you. With basic care, they should last you the rest of your life. I can't think of a better value than that.
