Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-01470 Diesel Needlenose Multi-plier

Customer Review: I like it so far.
Summary: 4 Stars

I have 2 Suspension Multi-tools from Gerber and decided to get this model for the tougher jobs I have. It is stronger then my other 2 and more comfortable when squeezing hard. I don't really like how the inner tools have to come out. I was so used to opening the knife part with one finger from the smaller models. I know that an opening mechanism like the Suspension would make it less comfortable however. I guess I'll take the comfort in this case. The case seams pretty good. It is a little heavy and big but again I needed something stronger and so I have it. It's a breeze to open and close the pliers and I got a good deal on the price. The only thing I would like to see is the pliers to retract flush with the handle and maybe a better way to get a hold on the smaller tools. It's functional and will now be my sidekick in the woods while hunting.

Customer Review: No Champ - but a Contender
Summary: 4 Stars

As owner of two Swiss Army Champs over more than twenty years, the Gerber Diesel is disappointing. It lacks the design flair and obvious quality materials and workmanship of the Victorinox products. This is probably not much more than an excellent School Metalwork Project. Fresh out of the box today, the pliers already show signs of oxydisation.

Other than the outer tools (knife, saw, file, scissors), opening other tools is a nail-tearing operation but I'm sure it'll loosen up with use.

The plastic locks are poorly made/fitted on my Diesel and have a habit of locking open, requiring considerable coaxing to close the tool (deeply irritating). Probably not a common fault.

I find the Phillips/Posidriv crosshead driver is prone to slip out of screw heads so care is needed in use to avoid damage.

The cutting blades, for my taste anyway, should face the other way - I can see this might be a safety measure. But that's the only measure - There's no ruler?! Come ON now.

The nose of the pliers protrudes when fully closed and I suspect this is going to chomp its way quickly through the ballistic nylon pouch.

Really pernickety, I know, but... why isn't a lanyard supplied?

BUT! Even given all of the above gripes, the Gerber Diesel represents good value for money. The tools included are limited but appear to be of simple but sturdy construction and I'm confident they're up to most tasks.

It's going to require far more TLC than the Swiss but I anticipate a good few years service. I'd recommend it.

Customer Review: Not what I expected

I was disappointed with this purchase so I returned it for the New Leatherman Wave. It was very "loose" feeling, some corrosion and I just opened the box.
I like my leatherman Wave and I am glad was able to exchange this with no problems at all.

Customer Review: Of course it's good

Great replacement for the one I lost. The knife is sharp and cuts paracord with ease. The sissors made it though a piece of paracord on the 3rd snip. Great mulitool overall.

Customer Review: Outstanding tool!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased mine as a kit from W*Mart. It included the extra bit set for less than most were selling just the tool for.

I use mine in my work EVERYDAY! It was tight at first but a very tiny bit of graphite powder made that work-in go faster and it's a breeze to deploy the pliers with just a flick of the wrist (everybody I work with grins when they hear that snap-open sound.) The great bit set (standard 1/4" screwdriver bits) comes with a piece that fits over the otherwise disappointing standard phillips head that comes built in. But this bit set lets me have what I need for any situation in the field.

The wire cutters cut clean and smoothly (important for the wiring we do) and the knive will cut through just about anything I need it to. There's a great saw blade (saw/knife) that cuts through thick plastics and wood. The scissors in this are bigger than the other models and I use them all the time.

I've had this tool about a year now and all my colleagues with their Leathermans have gone to W*Mart and purchased one of these! We look like the Gerber brigade :) but that tool is one of those things I don't leave the house without, anymore!

I agree with others that it would be nice for them to have taken the 1/4 second to stamp the side with a ruler/scale like the other units. I, too, used that frequently. I've actually taken a nail/scribe and marked the thing off myself but it is silly they didn't add that feature.
