Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-01470 Diesel Needlenose Multi-plierCustomer Review: Another Excellent Gerber Summary: 5 Stars
The Diesel Needlenose is only a little bigger than one of my favorite multi-tools of all time, the Gerber 400/Sport model, which is hard to beat for compactness without sacrificing utility.
The Diesel doesn't waste its extra size on more of the same and is definitely a great competitor to the vernable 400/Sport.
Like all good Gerber products, it can be opened one handed, and has all the basic tools you need for work, camping, or in many other situations. When I first started my career, a friend gave me a Gerber and said, "Wear it for a week." Now I feel like I lost my keys when I'm without it.
Customer Review: Awesome Gerber, but needs a ruler. Summary: 4 Stars
Being deployed in a combat zone, this little tool with a belt holster has been very useful. I have owned a Leatherman in the past, and until recently, owned a Gerber for the past 6 years. I prefer the Gerber due to its ease of use compared with the Leatherman. Specifically, the one-handed pliers opening mechanism with just a flick of the wrist, and the softer grip compared to the Leatherman, since you grip on a solid surface on the Gerber compared to the parts compartment on a Leatherman. This last point makes the Gerber more comfortable to hold than the Leatherman. The Leatherman tends to leave grip marks on the fingers and the palm of the hand.
About this particular model, there is room for improvement. I had to purchase a new model, as I lost my previous Gerber of 6 years. I chose this particular model because it is a new model, a 2005 edition, and allegedly has 15% greater endurance and strength compared to other Gerbers in its class. One feature that I would like to see added in future models is the inclusion of a ruler on the handle that comes standard in most other Gerber models.
I would rate this model 5 out of 5 stars since it is so nice and comfortable to use, but I have to take off a star since it did not include a ruler, a feature that I used a lot with my previous Gerber.
Customer Review: Awesome tool, superb "stand behind it 100%" service!! Summary: 5 Stars
Not only is the Gerber Diesel the finest multi-tool I've used (25+ years of military, personal and construction use) ... and I've owned and stress-tested every major brand ... but their after-the-sale product support is phenomenal. Actually, it's what customer service used to be like back when most of what we bought was made by American companies who cared about making repeat sales.
I found a Gerber Diesel that someone else had dropped in the road near my home. Unable to identify the previous owner, I started using it in my daily work as a home-improvement contractor. Razor-sharp blade, great needlenose pliers, etc., etc. Then one day I was trying to free a corroded fastener and overstressed the pliers hinge. SNAP! The stainless steel fractured and I had an "extra part" on my tool.
I packed it up and sent it to Gerber's customer service center with a brief note. Within 7 days, I received a brand new Diesel plus a beautiful Cordura belt sheath, at no charge. Wow! If I ever need another multitool -- and with quality and service like this, I doubt that will happen -- you can be sure I'll be buying Gerber!
Count me impressed. Consider the very reasonable price of the Diesel vs. the competition like SOG and Buck, and you can count me "awed."
Customer Review: Diesel Review Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the Gerber 22-01470 Diesel Needlenose to replace a lost leatherman tool. First this unit is heavy on your hip. It looks sturdy I haven't put to real punishment yet but have used it for general use. The one item that bothers me the most is my leatherman would fold completely around to access the blade and tools. To get the tools in and out takes several steps and the sleeves get in the way the tools. I was little disappointed with this item although I will continue to use. For the average Joe I would recommend a smaller tool.
Customer Review: Disappointment Summary: 2 Stars
The first day that my diesel arrived I was checking (opening and closing) the various tools/blades, while I was doing that one of the sliding lock mechanism's popped off. I own an earlier model of the Gerber multi tool which has given me very good service, as a result I was very disappointed how easy this one fell apart.
