There is no substitute. You need tongue & groove pliers? Then Channellocks are the only option. Try using an off-brand item. At the very best, you'll experience slippage, failure, and a ruined project. At the very worst, you could get hurt. Do not accept imitations. There are certain things for which there are no replacements that are acceptable. When only the best will do: Colt .45, Vise Grips locking pliers by Irwin, Crescent adjustable wrenches, Buck knives, Ford pick-up trucks, Pendleton wool shirts, and Channellock tongue & groove pliers.
